The recent changes to the California Smog Laws, making any ECU / DME software change illegal, changes the whole landscape for California car owners.  Those who either had, or were looking to upgrade their cars engine performance, the only option now is either to remain stock (which also means the surrounding engine elements (read – intake, exhaust, intercoolers, blow off valves, down pipes, injectors, Meth kits, etc) have to remain stock, as most aggressive engine hardware upgrades will require an engine software upgrade. That will only be possible if the engine software being upgraded is CARB (California Air Resource Board) EO (Executive Order) approved. (We won’t cover it here, but this change is not limited to cars – planes, boats, RVs, motorcycles, RTVs, etc, all come under this same ruling).

So, what’s one to do?

Well, the good news is that some of the engine “tuners” saw this coming, and started submitting their software to CA CARB team for full EO approval.  The ones approved, that we are aware of, so far are APR Tuning and DINAN.  APR Tuning provides software “tunes” for Audi, Porsche, and VW.  DINAN provides software for BMW and MINI (Note – both are actually owned by the same company, HOLLEY).
