Porsche 992 GT3 / GT3RS – Finishing Touches

Car manufacturers keep pushing the limits of the car features, capabilities, and there is no question of that with the Porsche 992 generation of the GT3 / GT3RS.  The major change or upgrade from the 991 platform was the front suspension and overall increased downforce.  Not that the 991 generation was a failure in any way, but Porsche threw out the limitation of not altering the front trunk space requirement, which allow them to change the front radiator size and position, and allowed them to change the front suspension mounting points.  This allowed them to not only change the front suspension geometry, but to also increase the front tire width.  Now, add on the cleanup of the front aerodynamics and flow, add a new DRS enabled huge rear wing, and you have two track monsters.  When customers ask us what is the best track car (other than a pure race car), the answer is always the 992 GT3 or GT3RS.  Given that amazing platform, is there anything really that needs to be done to improve the car?  ALWAYS.

SUSPENSION / ALIGNMENT

Regardless of your use case for the car, the one thing that is still true is that the alignment from the factory is NOT RIGHT.  Almost every customer has this “kool-aid” perspective that Porsche is near perfect, and that must be true w the alignment they put on the car when released from the factory.  What they don’t know is what we do know….almost every single car is not optimized for anything alignment wise, and most are significantly messed up.  The car may drive straight, but that’s about all it is good for.  For anything else, the alignment needs to be addressed. j

Once this realization is accepted, then the question is – what should the alignment be?  With the 992 platform, we have about 10 different progressions of the alignment specs, everything from those who bought this amazing car but will just drive it on the streets, to those that will use it for mountain carving, or autocross, or the various attack levels for track use.  Depending on the use case, the level of driver aggressiveness, and the tires to be use, these will guide the discussion and answer.  Unlike the prior generations, the front suspension alignment adjustments can be altered by both an “eccentric” bolt at the hub, and by shims at the mounting points for the front control arms.   But, there are limitations here.  If the objective is hard core track use, then the range of alignment adjustments on the front suspension are not sufficient to achieve the desired specs.  Good news..the aftermarket was quick to jump in here and provide upgrade options to allow this limitation to be overcome.

Our choice for this upgrade is the control arms that Dundon Motorsports offers.

You can further enhance the front suspension feel by upgrading the front outer toe links (no longer need bump steer adjustments, as the ride height being adjustable thru the shock doesn’t alter the steering toe link angle).  The Dundon control arm pieces (front inner control arm mounts, front steering toe links) are all that is needed up front.

Not only do they offer the longer front lower control arm (to achieve more front negative camber), but they offer various lengths to achieve a mild upgrade or a monsterous upgrade.

Out back, the same upgrade option is available….upgraded rear lower control arms.

Since aerodynamics was such a key element of the 992 platform, Dundon even implemented the same aero GT3 “R” type design into their front control arms.

If you requirements demand the upgrades, or whether they do not, either way, the factory stock alignment needs to be fixed.

EXHAUST

By far the most popular upgrade is the exhaust.  The glorious engine that the 992 GT3 / GT3RS has needs to be heard in full wail.  There are a large variety of exhaust options, some even to make the exhaust quieter if you are considering running at Laguna or other sound limited tracks.  Some exhausts are made for pure volume (JCR), some are made for sound and performance (Dundon), and some for a mild upgrade (SOUL Performance). We have had customers who have elected all those, and others as well.  Since the primary change is the exhaust tone and volume, we guide almost all customers to go listen to way too many video clips of all of them to find the solution that is closest to their vision.
Some offer just the rear muffler replacement (cat-back), some offer full systems (headers, cats, rear muffler). If you want to go for it all, we believe the Dundon solution offers the best solution, and best combination of options.  They even offer a set of tips that significantly alter the sound volume, that can easily be changed back and forth in just minutes.

Here is the stock exhaust setup –

The stock rear muffler weighs a ton…so, a side benefit of most of the aftermarket solutions is a significant weight savings.  Let’s start with the simple approach, just changing out the rear center muffler section.  Here is the JCR system, a system made to amplify the magnificent sound –

Now, the more complete solution approach offered by Dundon Motorsports. Everything from the header, to the cats, to the valves, to the rear center section, to various tip options.

Or, in more detail, here are each of the significant pieces –

The system offers full valvetronic control, using the stock Porsche exhaust valve control mechanism.

And another look at the rear center section and comparing it to the stock rear muffler section –

The last piece here in the solution are the tips.  Now, Dundon has taken a creative approach.  You can choose the tip type….nothing new there, but you can also ADD a set of silencers that bolt onto the Dundon rear exhaust section.

Here is how the Dundon stock Ti exhaust tips look up close –

Or with the addition of the silencer tip section –

And when you put the Dundon Ti system all together, it not only produces an amazing sound, great performance, but the looks are spectacular –

SAFETY

No discussion should be had about upgrading any car for track use that does not include the basic safety upgrades.  Too many of our discussions with customers push this upgrade down the priority list, when it should be the FIRST thing that anyone does. The great news with the GT3 and GT3 RS is that you don’t have to think about the seats…they are perfect.  But, you do need to add the interior roll bar / harness bar, and harnesses.  Why anyone would think about skimping here is beyond us…or they have not to enough track days to see the evidence. Whether by the drivers fault or someone else’s, too many track days have an incident where something really bad happens.  In 2025, there was a GT3 RS that had work done by another shop, and they didn’t complete the brake work properly, and the driver went into the corkscrew at Laguna assuming the brakes would be there, and they weren’t, and if not for the safety equipment installed, it would have been a horrible outcome.  Don’t ignore this.
The interior roll bar / harness bar that we go with is the GMG version.  If you get into the finer details of the bar and its design /implementation, this is a better bar in our view than all other versions out there.  Fitment is great –

We also color match the roll bar / harness bar to the customers color of choice.  It used to be that the choices of powder coat colors was limited, but that is not the case anymore.

The safety combination is first the roll bar / harness bar, then the addition of harnesses.  We choose either Schroth or Racetech depending on the requirements.  Both come in what is often referred to as Porsche specific…meaning the lap belts have the proper mounting hardware to directly attach to the Porsche bucket seats.   We retain the stock 3-point seat belts so that you can choose the harnesses for track use, and the standard belts for street use.

BRAKES

We could commit a whole article on brake, and brake selection. And, we could get into the almost religious discussion on whether you should run PCCB or Steel brakes. Our choice would be Steel…but you can run the PCCBs if you have the pocketbook and if that feel is what you desire.  There are three options overall – (1) stay w PCCB and upgrade the pads, (2) convert the PCCB rotors to steel rotors and upgrade the brake pads, or (3) upgrade the whole brake system.

(1) If you have PCCB and choose to stay that path, but intend on using the car for track use, then two comments, (1) we would move to the Ferodo brake pad, (2) we would guide you to not run the PCCB pad below 8mm in thickness.  If you go below that thickness, the wear on the PCCB rotor drastically accelerates.

(2) If you either have Steel brake or choose to convert your PCCB rotors and pads to Steel – then our choice would be GiroDisc 2-piece rotors (will normally last thru 3-4 sets of track pads), and Endless ME20 brake pads (these pads are now also made in this same compound by Brembo and GiroDisc, so lots of options).

(3) IF you decide to either convert your PCCB or Steel brakes to a full “big brake kit” (which is no bigger than stock), then our choice would be the AP Racing kit paired w the Endless brake pads (there is also a good Ferodo choice, just not quite as good as the Endless in our view).

If you are tracking your car regularly, or you burn thru brake pads often, then we highly recommend replacing the stock brake caliper bolts with caliper studs.  The stock hub / upright is aluminum, and not designed to have bolts regularly inserted, torqued, and taken out….at some relative early stage, the bolts will come out, and so will the threads of the hub / upright. Installing a set of caliper studs eliminates this concern.

BODY

If we are truly trying to be the fastest GT3 or GT3RS on the planet, then there are some small additional upgrades that can be implemented.

Splitters and front dive planes –

Lastly, if you are driving aggressively and reach for the shifter paddles and can’t find them, then you can always upgrade the paddles themselves to larger versions.

There is always more, but the good news is that the 992 platform doesn’t take a lot of upgrades to truly make it an outrageous track weapon.  Make it your own.

Contact us if you have any questions about any of this, or any other item.  We have done more 992 GT3 and GT3 RS cars than anyone…and we also provide all the standard factory services.
